Lonesome George may not be so lonesome anymore

1.42.46pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 24th Jul 2008

I read with happiness yesterday that Lonesome George may have managed to become a father.

George is the last Pinta Island Tortoise left. I met him when I was visiting the Galapagos Islands.

a number of eggs have been laid by one of the two tortoises that live with George - it was feared George may be in fertile - hopefully at least one of the eggs will hatch and a new baby tortoise will be born at least allowing the Pinta Island Tortoise to survive a bit longer (although it will only be part Pinta).
