Nicol Stephen steps down as Scottish Liberal Democrat Leader

12.37.07pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 3rd Jul 2008

Deputy 1st Minister Nicol Stephen MSP

Nicol Stephen

Nicol Stephen has stepped down as the Leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats. He is a former Deputy First Minister of the Scottish Parliaments.

Nicol has stood down for family reasons, saying "Everyone involved in politics knows that there are stresses and strains on family life. But when it goes beyond that, when it crosses a line, something has to be done. And at that stage - when you have to make a choice between family and politics - there can only be one answer. The health and wellbeing of your family has got to come first."
