McCain wins Florida

1.09.08pm GMT Wed 30th Jan 2008

John McCain has won the Republican contest in Florida with 36% of the vote. Mitt Romney was second with 31%. Rudy Giuliani who had pinned his hopes on Florida can a distant third with 15%, Mike Huckabee was fourth on 13%.

This almost certainly ends the campaigns of both Giuliani and Huckabee. It is likely that Giuliani will now back McCain.

The Democrats also voted but the state has been stripped of its delegates (by the Democratic National Committee) due to moving the Primary forward . The result was Hillary Clinton 50%, Barack Obama 33% and John Edwards 14%.
