Romney wins in Michigan as does Hillary (although it was near impossible not to!)

1.08.00pm GMT Wed 16th Jan 2008

Mitt Romney threw the race for Republican presidential nomination wide open last night by winning the Michigan Primary. With 94% of the vote counted, Romney had taken 39%, McCain a distant 30% and Mike Huckabee 16%. So far the Republicans have had three different winners in the three different contests.

Hillary Clinton also won in Michigan, although it was near impossible not to as she was the only name on the ballot paper - although over 40% votes "uncommitted". The Democrats had decided to rule Michigan's delegates out as the state moved their Primary Forward, all the candidates bar Hillary boycotted the poll.
